As an independent agent working on commission, my entire livelihood is based on obtaining new clients and servicing current clients. It’s easy to get caught up in sales numbers, goals, close ratios, etc. to make sure I am on the right track. Numbers are important and like any business, if you are not profitable, you will not survive.
That being said, I think it’s so easy to get caught up in all of these numbers that it’s easy to forget why I do what I do everyday. To serve others.
My goal is to help others achieve their dreams and goals. Zig Ziglar said it best, “If you help enough people get what they want, you will get what you want.”
In my business, it may not be something exciting like helping my clients purchase a new home, car, or luxury vacation. In reality, it’s much more important than that. My job is to protect those assets they have worked so hard to obtain.
I try to approach every interaction whether it be a phone call, face to face appointment, or even e-mail with an attitude of service. Instead of thinking, how can this person help me reach my goals, I want focus on how I can help them reach their goals. It may be simplistic, but at the end of the day if I focus only on serving others, the rest will take of itself.
My point isn’t that having individual goals is bad. It’s that by focusing on others, hitting those goals becomes more attainable.
